Hey guys! I recently got a report that users couldn’t access the kanji quizzes when trying to go beyond Kanji #39. I’m currently submitting the fix and I thank you all who submit error reports with a personal summary of what happens. Thanks to all of you, this app can continue to be improved. You can expect the update to be approved within the week.
です has a formal form!?
If you have gone past the first few introductory lessons, you may have gotten to the lessons that talk about different levels of formality. Various words have different forms depending on formality and typically get longer as they get more formal. Such is the case with the word です desu, to be.
In it’s informal form, it’s だ da. The casual form is です desu and the formal form is でございます degozaimasu. They all mean the same thing, but degoziamasu is the most formal form and can be heard when a business employee talks to a customer or in other formal meetings, typically of business or governmental nature. You’ve actually used this form already when saying ありがとうございます arigatou gozaimasu, or, thank you.
にほん ご の べんきょう は たのしい です ね！
Nihon go no benkyou wa tanoshii desu ne!
Studying Japanese is fun, isn’t it!
Note: put degozaimasu in place of desu and you get the formal form.
